IOT – From technological evolution to a revolution kind

Internet of things is not an accomplished thing but a vision, a roadmap but without destination, still being built, still evolving with scope for many long years to come. In hindsight, what IOT brings is what emerging world are now talking about, like - smart homes & cities after getting sufficiently stuffed with smart phones, but what exactly this smart means over here? – Its being connected and getting more connected per second which defines internet of things (IOT) as the network of physical things – Vehicles, buildings, devices and other physical objects embedded with sensors, software’s, electronics and a network layer that enables these physical devices to communicate among themselves, exchange data and constitute a cyber-physical system which can be smartly accessed, directed & controlled remotely.

In a technologically enhanced world of today, machines and manufactured objects have also started speaking (what?!?) with support from IOT and they want to tag themselves as “smart” & “social” and the machine ego it imbibes without any pre-conceived notion. What do we mean, is machine being human? – NO, but the level of interactive features, inter-communication capability, analytics ability and the automated decision making intelligence, these IOT devices inherits, makes up the differentiation.

However Internet of Things goes beyond the machine to machine interaction & exchanges and covers a plethora of devices and applications. As an add-on, analytics is used for predictive decision making using data collected from these interconnected embedded machines and IoT devices. Thus, making it essential for IoT companies to have extensive knowledge of analytics to realize their promising capability for developing futuristic products.

How IoT impacts us & Business?:

  1. Responsive Customer relationship:- IoT revolutionizes the way customers and companies can come along. Rather than just meeting at the sale point, their relationship becomes a continuous synergy, which may last as long as the customer keeps using a product and the respective services.
  2. Enhanced quality living:- Individual users of interconnected physical objects will see the unique services enhancing their affinity to the products, providing higher standard of life, comfort, security, fun and entertainment. Corporate users of these services will gain from efficiency upgrade, cost reduction, and optimized allocation of resources.
  3. Transport management:- Businesses usually does not require to have a connection or access to real world devices however if we see practices of UBER as an organization which is using IOT to provide their services which was previously delivered by fleet of owned transports now without having these fleets.
  4. Farming innovation:- Another revolution in agricultural field is contributed by IOT, as JOHN DECREE have added data connectivity to their farming equipment, providing farmers, specific information about which crops to plant, plough when and where and even best routes to plough.
  5. Evolved distributions:- The IoT can support electronic component distributors revamp their traditional business operating models and open up into adjoining markets.
  6. Semiconductors revenue management:- The IoT helps to install sensors to record yields and configurations at different production steps, and then in combination with analytics, can help the yield application to keep up with the incoming data and reducing the reaction time between detecting an actionable event and making appropriate decisions to adjust the manufacturing or test process.
  7. Contract manufacturing:- IoT guided predictive maintenance, uses sensors located in the various parts of the machine to provide continuous visibility into the machine and its operating status. These conditions & status information can further be used to align repair resources like human, spares & cash to a place where they exist in sync with the manufacturing threads which enhances production by significantly cutting downtime.
Top 5 companies & method of their IOT implementation

  1. AMAZON WEB SERVICE:- Through their wide variety of platforms like, Amazon Kinesis, Amazon S3, Lambda, Amazon Machine Learning, and Amazon DynamoDB to build IoT applications while helping their individual users to build their own IOT application which is capable of remotely accessing and controlling IOT sensors data.
  2. FACEBOOK:- Growing on with IoT evolution, Facebook is supplying a developer kit for Parse (a company it purchased in 2013), which is a back-end mobile platform that helps  it developers to create application with IoT efficacy which support major chip manufacturers like Intel, Atmel and Broadcom. This kit extends its supports to users while creating applications, capable to share data among interconnected devices.
  3. GE:- GE has built “Predix” a software which integrates machine emitted data with conventional cloud databases. This software helps integrate GE’s already existing products like hospital operations management, airline fuel optimisation and Grid IQ solutions for utility companies with machines that is capable of taking automated decisions.
  4. GOOGLE:- This giant has an application called “Brillo” which uses a language called Weave capable of smoothing the lines of connections between inter connected objects and their communication.
  5. IBM:- IBM has products like messaging applications for machine to machine data, named MessageSight, along with MobileFirst, which wings objects with mobile capabilities, and BlueMix, a platform for developing application that manages IoT data collection, analysis and related decision processes.
Gunaatita Technology is an emerging Internet of Things (IOT) inclined development centre with its focus on creating different IoT devices & apps using Microsoft .NET Micro framework application like Gadgeteer with Azure Blob storage. Additionally we also use C# on Netduino Plus 2 boards to create IoT devices using .net micro framework SDKs, tools for Microsoft Visual Studio and Netduino SDK.

IOT applications are not limited to any domain and encompasses continued innovation in Media, Environmental monitoring, Infrastructure management, Manufacturing, Energy management, Medical and healthcare systems, Building and home automation, transportation and Large scale deployments which is intrinsic to make the life easier for a person, however there also exists loud criticism and controversies around privacy, autonomy, control and its environmental impact on which stakeholders need to continuously debate on to check its adverse effect, prone to cause imbalance between human & nature.
